A stop work order, dated 5/01/15, is posted at 724 Fifth Avenue, formerly home to the White Eagle Tavern. This one, issued for "NO FALL PROTECTION,WORK CONTRARY,NO ROOF PROTECTION,NO FD PERMIT FOR ACETYLENE AND NO HOUSEKEEPING," is just the latest in a string of violations at this enlargement/conversion site.
Strangely enough, the old tavern sign is still intact and can be glimpsed behind sidewalk shed & netting.
Up the avenue, Eagle Provisions is gradually shedding signs & fixtures, and grocery sales abound. I wandered round the store with a heavy heart, and went back home bearing half-price pickles, pork shoulder butt, and a jar of Polish mustard.
